Greens Combustion and the British Flame Research Committee: Driving the Future of Combustion

At Greens Combustion, we’re proud to play a key role in the British Flame Research Committee (BFRC), supporting their mission to sustain the critical role of combustion in energy-intensive industries. The BFRC works tirelessly to inform policy, spark research, and share knowledge across commercial and academic sectors, all to bolster the UK’s efforts toward a global zero-carbon future. Being part of this journey isn’t just an honour; it’s a responsibility we take seriously.

A few years back, the BFRC set out to shake things up. In 2021, they launched a Flame Day, bringing together academia and industry to tackle the big challenges facing today’s market and explore how we can address them collectively. That first event featured five standalone presentations, all zeroing in on the shift to net-zero combustion. The response was nothing short of astonishing. Attendees were fired up, and the energy in the room was palpable. Fast forward to now, and the BFRC has just wrapped up its fourth Flame Day. What started as a single day has evolved into a full two-day conference, and we at Greens Combustion were thrilled to once again organise and sponsor the evening networking event.

This year, our Managing Director, Richard Withnall, and Technical Manager, Simon Kretzschmar, stepped up to share some of the exciting work we’ve been doing. They presented our “flare in a box” flare testing project and our research into industrial-scale ammonia firing for process burners. It was a chance to showcase how we’re pushing boundaries and contributing to the bigger picture of sustainable combustion.

The feedback across both days was incredibly uplifting. Every presentation got a warm reception, but what stood out most was the atmosphere throughout the event. There was a real buzz, proactive, two-way conversations flowed freely between regulators, academics, and industry folks. We were all united in hashing out how we can support combustion’s journey to net-zero. It wasn’t just about listening; it was about engaging, challenging, and inspiring each other.

We’re already looking forward to keeping the momentum going with the BFRC and next year’s event. It’ll be brilliant to see how far we’ve all come on this vital, complex topic. The road to net-zero is a tough one, but with collaboration like this, we’re confident we’re heading in the right direction.
